The Story of Clutter Cleaner and Matt Paxton
A simple mission
Clutter Cleaner began with a simple mission: to help people overwhelmed by life’s most difficult transitions
The beginnings: a personal story
A career in helping others
Matt’s expertise quickly gained attention, and he soon became one of the most recognizable faces in the industry, starring in the hit TV show Hoarders. For over a decade, Matt helped families across the country navigate the challenges of hoarding, extreme clutter, and estate cleanouts, becoming a trusted advisor and beloved figure in the process. While working on Hoarders, Matt developed an even deeper understanding of the psychological and emotional aspects of letting go, learning how to guide people through the process with patience, empathy, and expertise. His approach always centers on the people he serves, helping them find closure and peace through the act of cleaning out.
Matt’s dedication to honoring people’s stories took center stage with his PBS show Legacy List with Matt Paxton, where he and his team help families uncover hidden heirlooms and memories embedded in their possessions. Through this experience, Matt deepened his understanding of sentimental and emotional value and strengthened his compassion for families in transition, helping them preserve cherished memories while moving forward. With his latest show, Filthy Fortunes, airing on the Discovery Channel and streaming on MAX, Matt continues to entertain and educate families across the country.
In 2022, after numerous requests from families around the country looking for advice, Matt released the best-selling book, Keep the Memories, Lose the Stuff, in collaboration with AARP. The book encapsulates his approach to decluttering with sensitivity and practical advice, helping readers navigate their own emotional and physical journeys toward a lighter, more meaningful future.
The creation of the Clutter Cleaner franchise
With a growing national demand for his services, and an overwhelmingly positive response to his TV shows and books, Matt recognized that there was an opportunity to expand Clutter Cleaner beyond his personal reach. He envisioned a company that could maintain the same level of care and compassion while serving families across the country. And so, the Clutter Cleaner franchise family was born.
Today, Clutter Cleaner is a leading name in the estate cleanout, downsizing, and hoarding management industries. Through its network of franchises, the company continues Matt’s legacy of combining expertise with empathy, helping individuals and families across the country manage the difficult process of letting go, sorting through memories, celebrating our past, and preparing for our future.
